What is AIRE and how many Italians are registered at AIRE?

AIRE is the registry of Italian residents abroad. It was established in 1990.

The people who can enrolled in AIRE are Italian citizens who were born abroad or are living abroad long-term. The people who can’t enrolled in AIRE are Italian citizens who go abroad for a period of less than one year, seasonal workers, tenured state employees serving abroad who are notified under the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic Relations and Consular Relations of 1961 and 1963, respectively, and Italian military personnel serving in NATO offices. Italian citizens registered with AIRE will have the opportunity to vote by mail.

Municipalities are responsible for updating the AIRE register.
Each municipality is required to submit electronically, using a special computer procedure, which guarantees security and allows for direct updating of the data itself.

After a careful analysis of AIRE statistical data dated 31.12.2021, the trend of this phenomenon can be deduced: the largest number of Italian immigrants are mostly found in Europe (3,187,011) and South America (1,804,390).
